Travel Tips for Pregnant Women

Pregnancy is a blessing, and being pregnant should not keep you from taking pleasure in travelling. Nonetheless, pregnant women should be more careful and more prepared before going on in a travel adventure.  Here are a few reminders to keep in mind before your scheduled travel:

Through Air Travel

Familiarize yourself with the airline’s rules for pregnant women, and inform your husband or companions as well. Although general air travel rules apply also for pregnant women, every airline has specific guidance for pregnant women during their stay on the plane and you are expected to know and adhere to these rules. Take some time before your flight and browse the airline’s website for their policy manuals regarding pregnant women.

Request for a seat in the aisle. It is more convenient to seat in the aisle as it gives more space to move so that you and your baby will be in comfort throughout the flight. It will be also easier to go to the washroom from time-to-time if you are staying in the aisle.

Proper wearing of seatbelt. Seatbelts should be worn below the abdomen and fastened tight enough to keep you and your baby safe.

Avoid the stiffness in your body. Once allowed inside the plane, pregnant women should go on a walk within the cabin area to help proper circulation inside the body. Just be careful not to trip in the walkway.
Take water regularly. Ask for drinks frequently and keep yourself hydrated during the duration of the flight. Air quality inside the plane can cause you to lose body fluids much faster.

Through Land Travel

Putting on your seatbelt. Whether you are driving or sitting next to the driver, always wear your seatbelt. Just be sure to properly wear your seatbelt by letting the lower belt secured below your abdomen and the shoulder strap running above your shoulder and in between your breasts. You must ensure that no part of the seatbelt is running over and body-hugging your abdomen to keep your baby comfortable and safe.

Dealing with air bags. Air bags are designed to keep us safe in case accidents happen. For pregnant women, you must provide a safe distance between the chest and air bag by moving the seat a little to the back and leaning the back of your seat a bit.

Taking breaks along the way. It is necessary for pregnant women to take a break from sitting inside the car regularly to promote proper blood and air circulation inside the body. It is unhealthy for the baby if the blood does not properly move inside as nourishment are transported through it.

Generally, pregnant women are not prohibited from travelling, although some may have experiencing complicated pregnancy that may require them to consult a gynecologist to ensure that they are cleared for travel. If you are not sure of your condition, do not hesitate to seek consultation. Don’t compromise the health and safety of yourself and your child over the pleasure you may get from your travel adventure, particularly during holiday seasons.
